The performance data of the two i5 Touring variants correspond to those of the well-known i5 sedan: The i5 eDrive40 Touring delivers 250 kW with an electric motor on the rear axle, the i5 M60 xDrive Touring is designed as the current top model of the entire 5 series and offers 442 kW significantly more power – thanks to second engines and all-wheel drive. The well-known battery with a net energy content of 81.2 kWh is also installed in the underbody.

With the same battery and the same drives, the ranges of the two station wagon derivatives are of course slightly less than the sedan – the station wagon body is slightly heavier and not as aerodynamic. However, with 483 to 560 kilometers according to WLTP for the i5 eDrive40 Touring and 445 to 506 kilometers for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring, depending on the equipment, the loss of range is small. The i5 eDrive40 as a sedan only travels 18 kilometers further at 578 kilometers.

When it comes to charging, the sedan and station wagon are the same again: 11 kW is possible on the AC side as standard, and an onboard charger with 22 kW is also available as an option. Direct current can be charged with an output of up to 205 kW. BMW states the charging time from ten to 80 percent is around 30 minutes. Plug&Charge is possible with the previously unique “Multi Contract Option”, with which customers can store up to five individual Plug&Charge-enabled traction current contracts from different providers digitally in the vehicle.

The big difference, of course, lies in another feature: the trunk. Regardless of the type of drive – whether combustion engine, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric – there is 570 liters of loading space available in the station wagon. If the backrests of the rear seats are folded down, up to 1,700 liters can fit in the i5 Touring. In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the rear seat backrest, which can be split 40:20:40, from the trunk is also part of the standard equipment. Storage compartments under the cargo area floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net, the trunk cover and the charging cable of the fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. But: The separately opening rear window of the previous Touring models is no longer available in the new 5 Series.

The all-wheel drive i5 xDrive40, which BMW recently brought to the sedan with the new model year, is not yet available in the station wagon – at least at the start. The market launch in Germany, numerous other European countries and Japan will begin in May 2024, with other markets following in June 2024. BMW is not yet mentioning the prices; the i5 Touring is not yet listed in the configurator at the time this article was published.
